The Big Berkey is the most popular size that Berkey makes. It holds enough water to satisfy 2 to 3 people, and it's unobtrusive size fits easily in most kitchens.

The Big Berkey can hold up to 4 Black Berkey filters, but can be used with only 2 filters by plugging the extra filter holes. (Two plugs are included.) The advantage of using 4 filters in the system is that it will filter the water faster. However, many of our customers choose to only use 2 filters at a time, and find that it's sufficient for their needs. Each set of 2 Black Berkey filters will purify 6000 gallons. The standard system comes with 2 Black Berkey filters. Please use our filter calculator to get an estimate of how long your Black filters will last.

The Big Berkey is also capable of reducing fluoride in your water when used with Berkey's optional PF-2 fluoride filters. The fluoride filters screw onto the Black filters.

The Big Berkey is powerful enough to purify stagnant pond water, yet perfect for everyday use. Because it works by gravity, it requires no electricity to operate. The system is very easy to operate. Simply pour your unfiltered water in the top chamber. Gravity pushes the water through the filters and your purified water is stored in the bottom chamber.

The unit has a height of 19", and a diameter of 8.5". It is made of grade 304 polished stainless steel. The system has a water storage capacity of approximately 2.25 gallons.

The Black Berkey filters used in the Big Berkey will reduce or remove pathogens, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, VOC's, heavy metals, as well as bad tastes and odors. Black Berkey filters can be cleaned by using a scotch brite pad under running water.

*Lifetime warranty applies to stainless steel tanks, lid, lid knob, plugs, and plastic spigot. Lifetime warranty does not cover any filters nor any accidental damage. Black Berkey filters have a 2 year pro-rated warranty.

Big Berkey is Great for 1 to 2 people

I had the larger system before and gave it to my family with children. Now I am using the Big Berkey, which is adequate for my needs: drinking water, dog's water, humidifier, ice, etc. It is small enough that it can sit on my kitchen counter. I use Mason Jars to fill up reserves of water so I always have a ready supply.

We recently purchased the 2.25 gallon Big Berkey and it does a great job. We are keeping our travel size for the time being. There are two issues to note. First, it takes awhile for the weird smell and taste to go away after being primed. You may want to use the water for cooking instead of drinking for the first week or two, or use it in smoothies so the "newness" isn't so noticeable. Secondly, you'll get a hang of not overfilling it, sometimes by making the mistake of overfilling it. The water goes through pretty quickly with 4 filters, so the bottom chamber fills up very quickly. In fact, we heard sort of a whooshing noise as the water went way too high, and trickled out. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with the filter. If anything, it's working so efficiently that you'll have usable water in no time. If we had it to do over, we would have gotten the Big Berkey first with the 4 filters. We'd recommend it to anybody, especially over the plastic Brita filter.

Best drinking water ever

This is the best tasting water we have had since being a child. I purchased a stand off of Amazon that is 30" high with a 9.5 inch circumference for it to fit on. The Big Berkley with two filters is good enough for two people.

BEST money ever spent

I have had my Berkey for 4 years and it was the best thing I ever spent money on. I save tons of money on bottle water.. Our water every August (the lake turns over as they say) taste like dirt. This filters out All BAD taste .. I highly recommend this for everybody...

What a difference

This product was a very pleasant surprise to me because I did not think it would make our water taste much better. I was totally surprised by the pure taste of our water after filtering thru the Berkey system. I also found myself drinking much more water, coffee and tea at home now. Just a great product.
