Remember to read ingredient labels on storable food. Many pre-packaged meals contain unhealthy added ingredients such as High Fructose Corn Syrup, MSG (also hidden under the names: Autolyzed Yeast, Maltodextrin, Hydrolyzed Pea Protein, and Sodium Caseinate. Click here for more information on MSG labeling.) Other questionable ingredients to watch out for are Corn Syrup, Soy, TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein from soy) and Aspartame. For more information on the dangers of Aspartame, please click here and here.
Occasional use of prepackaged (MRE type) meals may be well tolerated. However, we don't recommend purchasing prepackaged meals as your only source of food in a time of emergency. Storing only prepackaged meals that must be consumed long-term could be unhealthy. Know what you are eating. Read the labels and make choices based on what would best fit your family needs. The companies we list below offer storable food with single ingredients such as plain vegetables, fruits and meats (broccoli, spinach, carrots, corn, apples, pears, peaches, apricots, pineapple, blueberries, raspberry, chicken, roast beef, turkey etc.).
While you will need to build your own meals vs. the "convenience" of prepackaged/processed meals, knowing exactly what ingredients are in your food guarantees healthier entrees for you and your family! In an emergency, these same simple foods (meats/vegetables) can also be used to feed your pets.
